JULY 21, 2026 PROGRAM

FOAM-FREE, AIRTIGHT & RESILIENT: MAKING HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING ENCLOSURES

Speaker: Eddie Fischer, 475 High Performance Building Supply
AIA credits – 2 AIA HSW PDH

As high-performance building standards continue to evolve, architects and design professionals are challenged to evaluate the long-term impacts of materials used in building enclosure systems. While foam-based insulation products have traditionally been a dominant strategy for achieving energy efficiency, concerns related to occupant health, fire performance, durability, moisture management, environmental impact, and end-of-life disposal have prompted the exploration of alternative approaches. This course examines foam-free high-performance enclosure systems and demonstrates how current energy, resilience, and sustainability goals can be achieved through alternative materials and assemblies. Participants will learn how these strategies contribute to healthier indoor environments, improved building durability, enhanced occupant safety, and reduced environmental impacts while meeting increasingly rigorous building performance standards.

AIA HSW Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the health, safety, environmental, and performance considerations associated with foam-based insulation systems used in high-performance building enclosures.

  2. Evaluate foam-free enclosure strategies that support energy efficiency, moisture control, durability, fire safety, and indoor environmental quality.

  3. Analyze the impact of material selection on occupant health, building resilience, carbon reduction goals, and long-term building performance.

  4. Apply best practices for designing high-performance building enclosures that meet evolving energy codes and sustainability standards while promoting the health, safety, and welfare of building occupants.
